Police were trying to establish whether the death was an attempted 'murder-suicide' or just a tragic accident.

The man and his daughter were  discovered at a  foot crossing close to Adwick station, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, just after noon on Tuesday.

The little girl was airlifted to hospital and where her condition was described as critical.

British Transport Police officers said they were amazed that the child survived.

A spokesman said: “The child was injured and has been airlifted to Sheffield Children's Hospital.
'The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to establish the identities of both the man and child.”

The father and daughter are said to have walked through fields and climbed over a 3ft wire fence onto the track.

Inspector Richard Price, from British Transport Police, said: ‘Trains travel at speeds of around 100mph on this track so it is amazing the child has survived.’
